My Valentine to You

Stephanie Melish WritesDear you,

How sweet it is I am able to write this letter to you. You see, it’s Valentine’s Day, a holiday entrenched with flowers, candies, chocolates, cards, fancy attire, lavish dinners, and, most of all, love.

But, I don’t give a crap about any of that. Bet you weren’t expecting that one!

What I do care about is YOU.

Let’s face reality. Valentine’s Day is riddled with ridiculously high expectations no one could possibly achieve.

Strip away all the red, pink, hearts, and confection messages, and you’re left with just a random day. A day just like yesterday or tomorrow. A day made for you to do with what you please.

But I see you. I know you. I understand you.

You wait for days like today, a “special” day, thinking it gives you some magical permission to go above and beyond.

You are so wrong.

I see you. I know you. I understand you.

I was you. I use to wait for holidays and special occasions to make bold moves. I, too, had it all wrong.

Society would push and pull me in many directions throughout the year, shuffling from holiday to holiday and mandating me to pay attention to the orchestrated commotion.

I had mistaken these special days or occasions as my opportunities to do more, play bigger, and impress upon others my feelings, thoughts, and beliefs.

Screw that.

I woke up.

I realized there are no holidays or special occasions, only days. Twenty-four sweet hours allocated to each and every one. You are no different than me. You get the same amount of time within these non-significant days. Your day, by any other name, still gives you an opportunity to make it exactly what you want.

What if?

What if you gave yourself permission to do more on any given day?

What if you had played bigger yesterday?

What if you didn’t wait for today to shout your love proclamations to your most cherished connections?

What if you lived each day like a holiday?

What would your world look like?

What would you dare to do differently?

Today is not a special day.

Today was a day made just for you because you woke up and are alive.

It’s your day…

It’s every day…

Made for you to declare new resolutions.

Made for you to love anyone and everyone.

Made for you to feel lucky.

Made for you to honor your Mother.

Made for you to memorialize those who fought for your freedom.

Made for you to honor your Father.

Made for you to celebrate Independence.

Made for you to pay tribute to your work.

Made for you to honor our Veterans.

Made for you to give Thanksgiving.

Made for you to remember the reason for the season.

What will you decide to do with it?

Straight with Love,

~S
