I’ll Break My Own Glass Ceiling, TYVM

While many are swooning over the prospect of the first female president, I’m not. Reason being, I know I don’t need any person to go before me and blaze a trail for me to follow. Oh Heck No! I do not subscribe to that belief system, and I hope you don’t either.

I don’t need Hillary to give me hope.

I don’t need Hillary to show me the way.

I don’t need Hillary to break the glass ceiling.

And I certainly don’t need Hillary Clinton to become President for me to know I can be President.

I have my own hope, can pave my own way, and will break my own glass ceilings. And, if I want, I will be President (if so elected by the great American people).

Why I don’t need Hillary to be elected to know I can be President:

  1. Encouragement. Parents, teachers, coaches, and mentors have always encouraged me to dream big and relentlessly pursue my interests. They have pushed me to study hard and practice to perfect my skills. That encouragement has led me to have some hefty confidence, which clearly shines through in my bold stance in this piece. Because of their actions and words over the years, I could be President.
  1. Belief. Not only do I have confidence, I partner that with self-belief. The kind of belief that rooted deep down sets my soul stirring because I know I can do anything, be anything, and accomplish anything. It’s that belief which led me to leap out on my own three years ago and start my business. It’s that same belief that tells me, if I wanted to, I could be President.
  1. Smarts. If belief is the foundation of my Presidential campaign, then smarts is one of my platforms. I know being educated and knowledgeable is key to success on any level. I am a constant student, learning and absorbing new information, both useful and some probably totally useless. My love of learning allows me to acknowledge I could be President.
  1. Work Ethic. Scrappy is how my friend and fellow author, Terri Sjodin, described me in her book titled the same. I like it. I am scrappy. Growing up in the Midwest and raised by two working parents, I was shown what it looks like to earn your keep, work hard for your money, and take pride in what you do. It’s this instilled work ethic that demonstrates I could be President.
  1. Trust. I trust America and its people to be a nation of equality and fairness. I believe if there were strong, qualified women who ran for President years ago, they would have had a chance to be elected, just as Hillary does now. I do not subscribe to the thought that our country is not ready for a woman President or that there are men who would not allow a woman to lead this country. I refuse to accept it, even if it is true, because I trust good will prevail. I trust that any woman, if they are encouraged when young, believe in their abilities, take education and knowledge seriously, and have an admirable work ethic, could be President.

No. I do not need Hillary to become President in order for me to know that myself, or another woman of any age, race, or sexual preference could in fact break the proverbial glass ceiling. Why? Because the glass ceiling exists only in our own minds.
